Rate: £700 - £800 per day umbrella (Locum/Interim)

Location: South East

Working: Remote (In person Counsel meeting once every 2 months)

About the Assistant Director of Legal & Democratic Services & Monitoring Officer Role:

An assistant director is required to join a local authority in the South East on a temporary basis for a period of 3+ Months whilst an extended period of permanent recruitment takes place.

Our client is ideally looking for someone to be the lead on governance matters across the council and provide light touch management across the legal service whilst acting in a monitoring officer capacity.

This role is offered on a remote working basis with the expectation of attending the office once every couple of months for council meetings. Due to the nature of the role, the client would like someone to take on the position on a full-time basis, however part-time candidates who can commit to 4 days per week will also be considered.

This role is suitable for a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive with Monitoring Officer Experience gained within Local Government.

Management Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Legal & Democratic Services & Monitoring Officer Role:

  • Day-to-day business management of the service with people management
  • Will be responsible for Legal, Democratic Services, and Information Governance
  • Lead and dip in and out of complex casework and major cases

Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Legal & Democratic Services & Monitoring Officer Role:

  • Allocation of legal work
  • 121s and Performance Management
  • Leading on high-profile cases
  • Client liaison
  • Acting as Monitoring Officer
  • Assisting the Director of Legal when required
  • Attendance at statutory meetings, constitutional meetings, or full council meetings every couple of months

Required experience/skills:

  • Experienced Local Government Solicitor, Barrister or CILEX
  • Preferably been a monitoring Officer or Deputy Monitoring Officer
  • Managed a team of lawyers at a senior level in local government
  • Preferably able to advise on local authority corporate governance issues
